The Helmholtz Systems shown here are used for generating precision magnetic fields for calibration of compasses, magnetometers, or in a larger forms may be used to cancel out ambient fields (such as the Earth's field). This might be necessary for taking precision measurements, or making precision adjustments requiring a neutral magnetic field such as aligning electron beam guns.

Each type of system needs a coils assembly and a power supply to function. These systems may be purchased with, or without the power supplies.

These are available in 1, 2 or 3 axis assemblies, from 4 inches in diameter to 6' cubes.
The power supplies are available in simple manual control configuration, all the way up to an automatic PC control, with data acquisition matched to the individual needs of the customer.

Helmholtz coils are very useful when relatively accurate, low value magnetic fields are required. The assembly is in reality at least one pair of coils with very specific diameter and separation. The theory is (that along the coil axis) the reduction in field as one moves away from the first coil, is compensated for by the increase in field strength as one nears the second coil. The magnetic flux density (B) or field strength (H) is directly proportional to the applied current in the coils. Thus, the field can be accurately defined as a function of the current.

The split configuration the Helmholtz coil allows entry from the side or from either end of the coil pair.
The field is relatively uniform volume located along the axis, centered between the coil pair.

The most commonly used systems are listed here for pocket style magnetometer calibration.
Inquire if your needs are for other style systems.
